THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH is a sweeping historical drama set during one of England’s darkest periods — the 12th century.
At the same time, it is an intimate and heartfelt story about ordinary people in an age of upheaval — about sacrificing oneself for something greater, breaking free from restrictive social bonds, and fighting for impossible love.

The musical-creating trio, Thomas Høg, Lasse Aagaard, and Sune Svanekier, are three old schoolmates from Elsinore, Denmark, who came together through a shared passion for music and theatre.
In the 1990s and 2000s, they wrote a multitude of musicals at a Danish academy for musically talented young people, which led to their professional debut with VON SCHOLTEN at the Folketeatret in 2010. This was followed by a successful run at the Østre Gasværk Teater with the productions THE SHAMER’S DAUGHTER 1 and 2 (nominated for a Reumert in 2014), WILD WITCH, and Ken Follett’s THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH.
The collaboration with Follett continued at Bellevue Teatret with A COLUMN OF FIRE, and in 2023 they created a production about Denmark’s then monarch in collaboration with Rønnow Musicals: The musical MARGRETHE was staged at the Royal Danish Theatre’s Old Stage.
When Thomas, Lasse, and Sune write musicals, they follow a set workflow: all three work together on developing the story or, in the case of an adaptation, shaping the material. Once the synopsis is complete, they each go their separate ways: Thomas writes the lyrics, Lasse composes the music, and Sune writes the dialogue. After that, they meet regularly to share their material with one another and refine it until it is ready to be placed in the hands of a director.
In 2025, Høg·Aagaard·Svanekier will premiere a new version of THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH at Jysk Musikteater in Silkeborg.
