THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH is a sweeping historical drama set during one of England’s darkest periods — the 12th century.
At the same time, it is an intimate and heartfelt story about ordinary people in an age of upheaval — about sacrificing oneself for something greater, breaking free from restrictive social bonds, and fighting for impossible love.

With over 30 musicals in their catalogue, the trio Høg • Aagaard • Svanekier has, over the last 30 years, become Denmark’s most successful creators of new, original musicals.
With a passion for the good story and the catchy music, Høg • Aagaard • Svanekier created the musical VON SCHOLTEN for the Folketeatret in 2010, and this was followed by a number of years of success at the Østre Gasværk Theatre with the shows THE SHAMER’S DAUGHTER 1 and THE SHAMER’S DAUGHTER 2 (Reumert nominated in 2014), WILDWITCH and Ken Follett’s THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH.
The collaboration with the international author Ken Follett continued at Bellevue Teatret with A COLUMN OF FIRE, which also toured Denmark.
On the occasion of Queen Margrethe II’s jubilee in 2022, Høg Aagaard Svanekier created an ambitious new musical entitled MARGRETHE, which was produced by Mikkel Rønnow Musicals and staged on the Royal Danish Theatre in 2023 with a subsequent tour to Odense and Aarhus.
Sune Svanekier and Thomas Høg have also been involved in almost 100 different productions of the musical Atlantis, which they wrote in 1993 with composer Peter Spies.
With THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH, it is the first time that the trio Høg • Aagaard • Svanekier revisits one of their previous works for a major rewrite. A large part of the original musical’s songs have been transformed into scenes with spoken lines. In addition, new songs have been added and the story has become more captivating and sharper told.
